Contact lenses not only serve as visual aids. During its development, contact lenses are also used to help overcome health problems.

Not only serves as a tool for eye health, but also help overcome the problem of migraine and diabetes.

1. Migraine

England Cricket captain, Andrew Strauss, wearing red contact lenses to keep out the blinding rays that cause migraines. Red tinted contact lens was developed to ease the torment of migraine.

These contact lenses work by filtering the light waves in excess amount, stimulate retinal receptors, regulate light-sensitive layer of tissue over the surface of the eye that lead to headaches.

Dr. Richard Garrison of San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Texas, recently carried out tests on 33 patients with a history of migraine have excessive sensitivity to light. Red lens and then inserted during a migraine attack coming due ray glow.

England cricket players, including captain Andrew Strauss and Matt Prior, recently tested using red contact lenses, which acts like a lens to allow them to see the ball better in bright light conditions.

2. Diabetes

A new development in contact lens technology could see the end penderitan of people with diabetes should always check their blood sugar levels by using the skin prick test.

Researchers at the University of Western Ontario, Canada created a lens that will react to the glucose found in tears. The lens will monitor glucose levels and then give a sign by changes of color on the lens. However, they still have to do regular blood tests to check its progress.

3. Glaucoma and cataracts

Scientists at the University of Florida has developed a contact lens tertanami drug particles. This technology is expected to be more efficient than eye drops.

“Only about one to five percent of the drugs delivered via eye drops reach the cornea and the rest went into the systemic circulation and can cause side effects,” said Anuj Chauhan from associate professor to conduct the study.

Mr Chauhan explained that traditional ophthalmic mixed with tears, which then flows into the nasal cavity and penetrate the blood stream, where the drug can cause serious side effects.

“We have developed a transparent contact lens charged particles that give the drug at therapeutic doses for five to 30 days. That can lead to drugs that are trapped in the cornea is absorbed 40 times as much.”

Barbara McLaughlan, of the Royal National Institute of Blind People said: “The concept of contact lenses that make nutrients such as vitamin E close to the eye to treat glaucoma, seems reasonable.”
